Other Types Of Lower Back Pain

Other types of low back pain can develop from degenerative conditions like arthritis and spinal stenosis.

How Is Lower Back Pain Treated?

Our team of orthopedic experts can recommend a variety of treatments for low back pain. The most common conservative approaches include:

  • Hot or cold therapy
  • Anti-inflammatory medications or pain relievers
  • Physical therapy
  • Acupuncture or chiropractic manipulation
  • Spinal Injections

If your low back pain doesn’t respond to conservative treatment, we can suggest ultra-minimally invasive spine procedures.

Ready To Say Goodbye To Back Pain?

Let’s talk about a personalized treatment plan to help you put your pain in the past, for good.

What Is Ultra-Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery?

Our experienced orthopedic team offers several ultra-minimally invasive spinal procedures as an alternative to traditional approaches relying on a large incision.

During ultra-minimally invasive spinal surgery, your doctor creates tiny incisions using specialized surgical tools. The advantages of minimally invasive surgery include faster recovery times with less pain, fewer risks of complications and scarring and improved patient outcomes.

Neck Pain

If you’ve been struggling with neck pain that hasn’t responded to treatment, NexGen Orthopedics can offer several treatments to put a stop to your pain, for good.

What Causes Neck Pain?

Neck pain can develop for several reasons, especially muscle strain and tension. This type of neck pain is often from poor posture, sitting at your desk for a long time, or abrupt movement, like car accidents or sports injuries.

Other common causes of neck pain include:

  • Cervical disc degeneration
  • Herniated disc
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Congenital abnormalities

How Is Neck Pain Treated?

Mild to moderate neck pain usually responds to self-care. Pain relievers and the use of heat or ice might be all that’s needed. A NexGen physical therapist can help you strengthen your neck with exercises and stretches.

If your neck pain doesn’t respond to conservative treatments, we may recommend a spinal injection or an ultra-minimally invasive spinal procedure.

Herniated Discs

Not all herniated discs cause pain and discomfort, but when they do, the pain can be intense. NexGen Orthopedics offers the most innovative, ultra-minimally invasive techniques available for acute or chronic pain conditions like herniated discs.

What Causes Herniated Discs?

Discs are the rubbery cushions between the vertebrae in your spine. When there’s a tear in the tough exterior, the soft center can push through. This can start off as a bulging disc and progress to a herniated or ruptured disc.

Causes can include:

  • Strain or injury
  • Excess weight
  • Genetics
  • Occupation
  • Repetitive activities

What are the symptoms of a herniated disc?

Sciatica is one of the most common symptoms of a herniated disc in the lower back. Pressure on the sciatic nerve can cause pain, tingling, numbness, or burning that radiates from the hip or buttock into the leg and even into the foot.

Cervical (Neck) pain can arise in the form of dull or sharp pain in the neck or between the shoulder blades. The pain can radiate down the arms to the hands or fingers. Pain, numbness or tingling in the shoulder or arm is also very common.

Other Symptoms

  • Arm or leg pain
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Muscle weakness
  • Loss of dexterity or coordination

How Is a Herniated Disc Treated?

The NexGen Orthopedics team will complete a thorough physical exam to review your symptoms and locate the exact source of pain. Once completed, we may suggest an X-ray and/or MRI of the area to confirm your diagnosis.

Based on your confirmed diagnosis, we’ll create a personal plan of care to relieve your symptoms and reduce your pain. Your treatment plan may include:

  • Physical therapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Spinal manipulation
  • Muscle relaxers, anti-inflammatories, and pain relievers
  • Spinal injections
  • Ultra-minimally invasive procedures

Sciatica

At least 40% of Americans will suffer from sciatica at some point during their lives. The good news: NexGen Orthopedics has the treatments you need to put your pain in the past.

What Causes Sciatica?

Your sciatic nerves are the largest single nerves in your entire body and connect your spinal cord with the muscles in your feet and legs. If your sciatic nerve becomes inflamed, it causes pain, tingling, and numbness. The pain it causes can vary, but it typically feels sharp, burning, or like jolts of electricity.

You can develop an inflamed sciatic nerve for a variety of reasons, including spinal issues like herniated discs or bone spurs. Ignoring sciatica can cause irreversible nerve damage.

Other Sciatica Risk factors

  • A sedentary lifestyle
  • Prolonged periods of sitting
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Having conditions like diabetes that can cause nerve damage
  • Occupations involving a lot of heavy lifting, long periods of driving, or back twisting

How is Sciatica Treated?

To treat your sciatica, the NexGen team will conduct a full physical examination to identify the cause of your sciatic nerve inflammation. Based on your diagnosis, we’ll create a personalized approach to relieve your symptoms and reduce your inflammation.

Common sciatica treatments include:

  • Prescriptions like muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatories, and pain relievers
  • Hot and cold compresses
  • Massage therapy, spinal manipulation, and physical therapy
  • Steroid injections or nerve blocks
  • Regenerative spine and joint injections
  • Ultra-minimally invasive spinal procedures

In addition to medical treatments for sciatica, the NexGen team might also recommend lifestyle changes designed to improve your posture and body mechanics, nutritional counseling for weight management, and/or more physical activity to improve your back health.
